Former Bank of New South Wales

The Stockinbingal branch of the Bank of New South Wales was established in 1907, in a building at 28 Hibernia Street. In 1913, the bank purchased a corner site, opposite the Commercial Hotel, where once was the post office.

Architect William Hardy Wilson, of Wilson and Neave Sydney, was commissioned to prepare plans for the new bank building, and tenders were called for in October 1914. The successful tenderer for the construction of the project was Mr J G Taylor, who completed the substantial brick banking chambers and residence in September 1915.

The bank was downgraded to an agency in 1972, operating only 2 days per week. In January 1974, despite public protests, the bank closed and the site later sold. For many years, a café/roadhouse operated from the premises, but it is now used as a private residence.
